REVIEW BY TAMSIN JONES
OUT NOW VIA NICE SWAN RECORDS
I was really intrigued to review this single and EP by The Band Anorak Patch released by Nice Swan records that have worked previously worked with Sports Team, FUR, Malady and many more exciting new UK acts.
The band from Colchester range in age from 15- 18 years old. The Sunday Times called their previous single ‘Delilah’ ‘One of the best singles of the year’ back in 2021.
The band consist of Effie Lawrence on Vocals/Keyboards (17), Eleanor Helliwell on Bass (16), Oscar Ryland playing Guitar (18), Luca Ryland on Drums/Vocals (15) Their ages don’t reflect the production of the music they make, they sound like they have been playing together for a much longer time than is possible. Ellie’s vocals suit the guitar and tempo immensely with the timing throughout being immaculate.
The new single off the EP ‘Paris will be paid for’ sets in with a really repetitive bass and in places had hints of ‘Queens Of The Stone Age’ in its mystical rock quirkiness. Guitarist Oscar describes it as
“Paris will be paid for’ is a song of ours which combines pop hooks and more off kilter music. It’s at a constant tempo however it changes time signatures multiple times throughout the song. It makes it wonky and the more melodic parts can sort of too because of that.”
The Ep does that throughout gives you unexpected changes along with lyrics that don’t take things seriously, which are described by the band as ‘absurd and silly, and that nothing is taken too seriously’.
‘Blue Jeans’ off the EP is a personal faviroute of mine from the EP, which drops a dramatic slow pace with the instruments at 1.41 which is almost haunting, then 2.31 gives you a bigger energy burst than your morning espresso, with lyrics that came out from nowhere.
This band are to be taken seriously and deserve a listen
7/10
